"It was unacceptable to have women replacing men. They could release men for duty — that was patriotic — but they couldn't replace men," -Historian Landdeck
25,000 women all across the country volunteered to train as a WASP, though only 1,879 women were accepted to become aviators because they needed around 75 hours of flying in order to be considered a worthy applicant. Although only 1,074 of WASP completed training, we believe this had no representation of their capabilities as pilots because men had a 100% acceptance rate no matter how little experience they had as an aviator.
"training women pilots was a waste of resources and should be terminated" -Ramspeck Committee http://www.loc.gov/pictures/item/hec2009014265/

Unfortunately, the Women Air force Service Pilots wasn't without problems. Military officials were convinced that women could not fly as well as men and often disputed the decision to have women fly as ferrying pilots arguing that their roles should be, "keeping the home fires burning.” We have full confidence that women could fly just as well men. They were treated unfairly and weren't credited for their outstanding abilities, such as when they had better piloting test scores than men.
"The situation is that if you continue in service, you will be replacing instead of releasing our young men." -General Hap Arnold |
